I have my whole iTunes library on a flash drive that is not dependent on ANYTHING (remote servers, ISP, reception, etc.) other than being inserted.

If you think cloud is great...GFU!!!! :p

My best buy in toledo, oh said they would call me today. I got anxious and called them and they said they won't be getting a shipment at all today and not until tomorrow morning. They refused to set up an appointment with me saying they can't as they don't know how many iPhones they are getting. Cmon it's T-minus 18 hours until they open tomorrow and they still DON'T KNOW?!

    I am frustrated. I am numbers 8 and 9 for 16gb black.

That's awfully friendly. In the bay area (USA) we do nothing of the sort.
Yeah, it's not part of learning to drive per se (not until you get into Advanced Driving tests), but any decent driving instructor should at least mention it to his / her pupil.

Right! Back on topic. So, white iPhone 4...;)

The latter in this case unfortunately.

QuickTime Pro usually gives you the option to download video content of the web, but these keynote streams are made in such a way that you can't save the entire movie. You download a part of it (cache), then you play that part, and after playing it, the cache gets deleted. And then the next part, and the next.... and so on.

To download the enitre movie stream, you need somekind of app that let's you save the cache.

I don't know why Apple doesn't podcast it, or make it downloadable..... but they are really doing their best to prevent it being downloaded.

IIRC not one Steve-note was made available by Apple. There are "alternative sources" to get them, but nothing legal....

Well I do not have broadband in my apartment (only here for 3 months) and a DSL connection is out of the question due to it being a serviced apartment. I tried hi-download but it streams @ 6kb/s and stops around 40mb!!

Would be a great help if somebody rips this and make it available via bit torrent!

First of all, I can only see a small section of map when in an area with no coverage. Second of all, the automatically detected location on my iPhone 2G is wildly inaccurate to the tune of a couple of miles.

So move the map to where the problem occurred before submitting the report.

This is a poorly designed application from AT&T

Um, no. You just don't know how to use it properly. That's not AT&T's fault.

While Apple's new iMac models released yesterday (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/05/03/apple-releases-new-sandy-bridge-quad-core-imacs-with-thunderbolt/) appear nearly identical to their predecessors at first glance, the company has of course made a number of changes to beef up performance of its flagship desktop line.

    Just to clarify this:

This effect has a) nothing to do with the accelerometer or gyro; b) nothing to do with the effect seen in Nintendo 3DS c) nothing to do with perceiving depth.
What looks amazing on that video because it is 2D is actually a not very convincing effect. The problem is, that the display is NOT a 3D display. Don't get this wrong, there is no 3D functionality built in the iPad 2 whatsoever, so both of your eyes will see the same picture, so that you won't think that this is 3 dimensional at all.

If, however, this technique could be combined with a new display technology that works like the (pretty bad btw) display of the 3DS, BUT with some kind of moving "sweet spot", this effect could in fact trick your eyes in a very convincing way (and would be the first 3D display technology that would convince me). There are I think already patents for a display like that. I think they even are from apple.

(Sorry for the english btw, not a native speaker)

I'm pretty sure no-one thought that apple released the iPad 2 forgetting to say that it was 3D compatible, but this surely gives a way to pseudo 3D, which is pretty neat, better to have a cool even if fake 3d effect on a 2D screen if they can refine this method

If you look at mid-high range rackmount equipment you'll see they often have rows of fans two deep for redundancy, if one fan fails there is another one right behind it; and the ducting is designed to provide sufficient and even airflow over all critical components.
If you go the Linux route, you'd be wise to run smartd to monitor hard drive temperatures and email/sms you if the temp hits an upper limit.

This is one of the reasons I'm a fan of IBM servers. They do the double row of fans, they have a dual power supply option, and both the fans and power supplies are hot-pluggable. If you do the cabling right (and they supply a bracket for this) you can just slide the box out of the rack on the rollers, take the top off (flip lever), pull a fan (flip a little latch, it comes right out), and plop a new one in, and never skip a beat.

Of course, the system will notify you if something requires service. There is a separate network connection for the onboard management processor, and you can do remote reboots (watching the BIOS messages), even update the BIOS remotely.

    Similar set-up for power supplies.

Their on-site service is also great. I had a couple of servers installed in a Wall St. location and required service. (OK, Broad St. to be exact.) When IBM says two hours, they mean two hours. (You pay more for better response time.)

The thermal design is of course excellent. Beautiful clear plastic ducts for the CPUs. Not the typical box where they just blow a bunch of fans over the components and pray.

I think this is the #1 reason people don't switch; They think that the difficulties of windows are how computing is supposed to be, namely, complicated, expensive, and time consuming.

I have to fight tooth and nail at my company to use a mac because, and I quote my "IT Professional"; "Macs are too expensive, they get too many viruses, and they're too hard to network and support". Now, granted, this woman isn't bright and was "promoted" to network admin from some receptionist job at some point, but this is how most companies think.

I have to disagree. I really don't think it is that sophisticated of an issue. It comes down to software and deployment. The people on this board are quite intelligent, so I would expect they can concede Windows rules the software market.

I am the network admin, on the side, for a small business. Additionally, I am the purchasing manager, and as the purchasing manager it is not prudent for me to purchase any Macs. Windows 2003 SBS (small business server) is an excellent backend server. Remote access, VPN, and exchange server simply are amazing tools for collaboration and connectivity to peers. On SBS 2003 they are all included.

The computers I purchase must have Windows XP Pro, which is a must for our domain management. I have actually added a Mac to our active directory, and had Entourage running off Exchange, and I can tell you it was a big pain in the ass. HP Business Computers are excellent at providing a clean install of Windows XP Pro. I simply don't see a decent argument for an employee to have a Mac when all the programs they are required to run are on Windows. Additionally, I will not waste time or money purchasing additional licenses of XP Pro for Macs, and then have to install it. Since we are a construction company we are heavy into Timberline (SQL based estimating and accounting...amazing application), Access, Visio, Project, and AutoCAD. I have yet to find viable alternatives on the Mac that has full compatibility.

In your argument you mentioned iTunes. Well I have that for Windows. I find Picasa to be a better application than iLife, and I don’t use Garage Band or iMovie.

Of course for home use there are plenty of software choices that are arguably the best in their class, such as iLife. However, those specific applications are not significant value added tools for our business.

The truth is I own a Mac at home for simple entertainment. It’s fun to use a different platform from time to time. However, Ubuntu and OS X are still entertainment OSs for me and not much more.

However, when money is on the line I would never choose a Mac in our business. They simply don’t have a competitive advantage and are not able to offer any software that would make our business more efficient. Now I could argue that software developers can be blamed for not offering Mac versions of critical applications, but I really don’t care.

So these results are VERY impressive for the iPhone

    And your point is? :D

People are still gonna complain unfortunately:( Its all about priorities. I for one am a huge Valve fan period(hence my interest in the thread)...that said, Im not super enthusiastic about MR threads on "Facetime Updates"/etc. People just care about different things...I dont think thats crazy;) Stay well friend!
I see the point, but there's a bit of a difference between something not being to your taste and telling the people who run the sites that they're geeks who don't know what constitutes a newsworthy site. :)

If I did complain I'd do it in a way that was at least civil, hehe.

I figured they were talking about network traffic as well. Where would they get the road traffic information from users? I'd like to see a quality turn-by-turn navigation feature become a standard offering and improved traffic info would be a nice plus.

For example: After some opt-in, your phone records its GPS locations, finds out what looks like driving based on speed etc., sends the data to Apple, where they use it to find streets that are not in their mapping software, and the most useful thing would be average speed data depending on the time of day. If you are in a traffic jam and want to be helpful, you press a button to send the information right now, not when you are near to some WiFi. So people can be directed on the best routes based on actual average speeds, and they can be sent around traffic jams in real time.

There's no way to distinguish between whether the user is a pedestrian or in a vehicle.
Could be a cyclist flying along roads, or a person jogging, at the same pace as a car stuck in traffic. Has the car stopped because of heavy traffic, or because they can't hold it in any longer!!

There's way to many variables to consider for this to be about them collecting road traffic information.

It's not a trivial problem, but not really _that_ difficult. If it ever goes over 30mph then it's a car, and if it doesn't stop at a stop sign then it's a bicycle :-) Seriously, it's quite possible to sort this out. And there are many iPhones around, so if you have some iPhones at 30 mph and some at 4 mph on the same road, then you know who are drivers and who are pedestrians. If iPhones move at an average of 3 mph through your favourite park, then turn-by-turn software won't direct car traffic there, whether it is pedestrians or enormous traffic jam.

Try turning off features you're not using. I'm unfortunately using an Android phone at the moment, but I was able to get battery life up to about a week by turning off GPS, WiFi, etc. It has been a while since I used an iPhone, but I imagine you might be able to do something similar.
A WEEK iPhone battery life? Even if you cripple the phone by disabling features, there's still no way it would last even close to a week unless it's in sleep mode the entire time

Guess this is just more evidence that vindicates her 'retirement'.

Are you as old as Helen? Have you seen that she has seen?

Just because she speaks of Jewish influence in Washington, does not automatically make her anti-Semitic. Sorry to burst your self-created bubble.

There can be no question that undue influence (given the weight of Jewish voters) has been going on for years.
